I put together these fun Vintage Book Bundles wrapped in burlap twine to add a splash of color to any space in your home.

Over 100 year old tin cornice

I was able to get my hands on several pieces of this amazing, old, mintish green, chippy tin cornice. The cool part about them is that they came out of a historic building in the little town I grew up in. I have only made one shelf out of this tin and it was for another girl that grew up in the same town. I haven't put these up in my shop yet, because I am having a hard time wanting to part with them. So i'll probably keep a few for my self {hehe} and sell the rest.

I was going through all my old posts and I have a ton that I took off my blog and just saved as drafts. I had forgotten about some of these pieces. These were the pieces that started Decor Createur. So I thought it would be kinda fun to give you the history of Decor Createur and how it got started.

It was amazing though

It all started when I fell in love with the tin tile. I was seeing antique tin tiles in all the little home decor boutiques but they were way out of my price range. I really wanted some but just couldn't justify spending so much on one. I was bound and determined to find some, so I searched online and found where I could buy new raw tin tiles for so much cheaper. All I had to do is paint them my self. Done deal.. I ordered my the pieces I wanted and when I got them painted them to coordinate with my living room. They were awesome! Everyone that came over was in love and wanted their own too. Then they turned into super Saturday projects for my ward and then they started spreading like a wild fire.

At first I didn't think about selling them, but then I was introduced to the tin cornice shelf. I wanted to figure out how to make them and make a business out of it. I ordered several pieces for shelves, and tons of tin tiles. When I got all my pieces in I went back home {where I live now} to my dads {carpenter in the past} and had him show me how to build a shelf.

Then I had to come up with a name. I made me a list of names that described what I did. There was some pretty cheesy ones. None of them I was really pleased with. Back then every thing written in french was super popular, so I got on a translating website and started typing in the names I had on my list. There were two that really stood out to me. 1. Lotta Bella {beautiful tin}, and 2. Decor Createur {creative decor}. I liked them both and couldn't decide. I started thinking out side the box. Was I just going to be making shelves forever? Ive always wanted my own shop with a wide variety of home accessories. That's when I decided on Decor Createur.

I started out selling my pieces at "in home boutiques". Then people started talking and spreading my name. Then it started spreading out of state into Utah. I was discovering more styles to make and with trial and error, my shelves took on a whole new and better look.

Sadly my little family and I ended up moving back home due to the economy and my business slowed down tremendously. I then started considering selling on Etsy. Then one day I got a phone call.. It was my favorite, and the most amazing home decor shop/boutique.. Designer Blvd. They wanted to buy my shelves and sell them in their store.. I seriously was jumping around the house and squealing like a little girl. I had a perma grin for weeks.

They were selling my shelves like crazy. They were having me do custom orders for their design jobs. Well they still are :) I was so so busy. My Etsy shop got put on hold. I was so busy building shelves and being a mom, I just didn't have time to take on one more thing. But I made it a goal to still open one in the future. In 2010 I made it my goal to have an Etsy shop up and going at least by the end of the year. Well it was Dec 31 when I opened my shop, but hey, I still did it.

I just have to say I love what I do. I don't know if to many people can say they love their job, but I do... I am so excited that my pieces are being sold all over the country now and I can't wait for it to grow into something so much bigger.

Don't know what it is about mustard yellow, but I get butterflies everytime I see furniture, pic frames, hair accessories, etc.. in this color. I would like some piece of furniture in my living room thats bold {mustard yellow}, antiqued and chippy.

I love tufted anything... If my husband would allow it I would have tufted sofas like the amazing ones at Horchow. sigh...... He wants a reclining sectional, so we have bit of a problem there ;)

{old rusty rusty frames}

{rusty corrugated tin frames}

I saw some corrugated tin picture frames, similar to this one, several years back. I was in love... But of course I was bound and determined to figure out how to make some my self.. I lived in the city then and rusty corrugated tin was hard to come by. Almost 2 years ago my family and I moved out of the city and into a small town in the country. There's rusty tin everywhere, but you can't go around stealing tin off of people's barns right ;)

In the fall of 2009, on my deer hunt ,my husband and I came across the mother load of rusty corrugated tin. In the middle of no where in a huge wash.. Jack Pot... All the pieces were part of an old barn or shed at one time, but had fallen down and was mostly covered by sand.. After hunting season was over, we hooked up to our flat bed trailer and headed back out there..

I have had this stack of rusty tin for over a year now and have been procrastinating on my project. Why??? Well 1. one day I tried cutting through the tin with tin shears and holy crap that stuff is hard to cut through.. 2. I have been afraid to use my husbands metal grinder which would cut the tin, and 3. I just wanted my husband to do it for me.

The other day I finally got brave and busted out the hubs grinder and started playing around with it. Surprisingly it was really fun! I got the hang of it and now I'm grinding on all kinds of metal.

Here's a little step by step tutorial on one of the frames I made.

First I cut out the tin for the frame. This one I cut approximately 6"x6". Then I traced a 3"x3" square for opening of the frame. I based this off of a frame I had already. I then went over my pencil marks with the grinder so I could see where I needed to cut.

My air compressor is not that big, so trying to cut this square out was taking way to long. I got the grinder through the metal and made the hole big enough for tin snips to fit in and finish the job.

After I got the square cut out, I went over the edges with the grinder to smooth out any rough or sharp edges.

This is one I've completed. It's big and chunky and I love it. I didn't want nails or screws showing on front so I used clear Liquid Nails to glue the glass on the back and all the wood that holds the picture in place. It took a long while for the glue to dry (like 24 hours) but that stuff (liquid nails) works wonders and my backing is on there for good.

I love the curvyness they have, the rusty patina, and knowing that these pieces where part of a structure way back in time.. Love Love.....

My first intentions for these pieces, where to be coat racks. Well the knobs I put on weren't really "coat worthy". Plus if their purpose was to hang coats, you wouldn't ever see the adorable knobs. I had to figure out what else they could be used for. Then it dawned on me.... Necklaces!!! How perfect are they to hang your favorite necklaces on.

Do you ever feel like your life/house is unorganized and just a mess. I have four kids aging from 1-7. I know, craziness :) So literally I was constantly cleaning all day loooong every day. If you have four kids you know what laundry is alone.. Geez never ending... I am a very laid back person and the load of doing everything {being a stay at home mom trying to work and keep up with all the other everyday life stuff} was really wearing on me.. I would try to get my kids to help me out but all they did was wine at me.. ugh..... You mind if I vent for a second ;) Something had to change... I had had it, I was done. I was sick of cleaning up everyone else's messes all dang day. My kids were old enough to have responsibilities and I needed to lay things down, be a better mom, and get our home and family organized.

I needed a fun way to get my kids interested in helping out. I googled chore charts and came across this.. This would be the perfect thing for us to start off with. Looked super easy and I could totally do it.. I got all my supplies and on Saturday got to work on it..

The whole point is each kid has their own block and all the chores are wrote down on the Popsicle sticks. Everyday you put the chore/sticks you want each kid to do in their block.

I used:

1-2x4 piece of wood

Popsicle sticks

First I cut 5- 3 1/2 in pieces. Four are to stand up and one is to lay down.

Then 1- 9 1/2 inch long piece for the bottom.

The tall blocks are to hold each kids chore sticks that they have to do each day and the short one holds all the chore sticks that aren't being used.

I used this bit to drill the big hole for the shortest block. This was a pain. The wood kept on spinning and I twisted my arm like 10 times and probably said some .... words :) But I found a spot to hold the wood in place and it wasn't so bad after I figured that out.

Then I used this one for the small holes on the tall blocks. This was fun and super easy. It took me like one minute to drill all four holes.

After I got all the holes drilled I sanded each piece to get all the edges smooth.

I then traced each side of wood I was going to cover onto the scrapbook paper, then cut it out. I then modge podged the paper onto the wood.

After it dried I sanded all the edges so there was no paper hanging off.

I went over the sanded edges with brown glaze to give it an older distressed look. After the glaze dried I modge podged over each block to seal and protect it.

While it was all drying, I got my Popsicle sticks and painted them with chalk board paint. I thought it would be fun to have chalk board sticks..

As soon as they dried it was complete.

It was so easy and my kids love it.. It has totally worked too. My kids dig it and are liking doing chores. And I think it is pretty cute as well..

So hears to the start to organization.

I added more magnet sets to My Etsy today. The others didn't last long so I've been working on more.

I'm getting better at the whole shipping thing. Each piece I ship I get more creative with how I package it. I find it kinda fun :)

I don't know why, but I guess I was a little afraid of selling online and that whole bit. Afraid of the unknown I guess. I know I'm a dork. But I finally just jumped in and did it. The out come is great so far.. Something I've wanted to do for a while now and I finally did and it feels awesome.... K I just had to get that out :)

These are the teeniest little cute bags ever. Perfect for my magnets... Can't wait to send off more :)

Now i'm off to making some chore chart block things that I can't wait to share with you..

{Dream Board}

I found this old window at an antique store less than a year ago and knew it had so much potential so I snatched it up. Forever I couldn't decide what exactly I wanted to do with it and then I found my inspiration at an another antique store. I called it a dream board... It was an old window like mine, except it had metal screening on the back instead of glass..

Don't know why I thought of "dream board" but that was what popped in my head. Anyways...

So I broke the glass out of it, then went to Ace Hardware and bought some wire fencing. That was the only thing closest to metal screening that this little town had.. But it looked just like the screening that was in the inspirational piece. So I cut the piece to fit the back of the window and stapled it on.

I then painted the screen with brown and black spray paint to make it look rusty.. Sorry no pics during the process..

When I put the screening on I thought that the whole piece needed a little extra something and this is what I thought would be perfect for it.

I found the wood onlay's at Home Depot . {This is just an example i found online.}

I glued it on instead of nailing because it was pretty thin and figured if I nailed it it would break. Then I painted it cream and antiqued it. It's actually kinda embarrassing the crazy colors this thing went through... Cream was a safe color for the frame and I knew it would turn out fab..It was perfect..

Love this little thing. Don't what it is, but I love the rustiness of it and it gives the whole piece character.

One of the best parts of this whole piece, and I guess it's why I call it the "dream board", because it's magnetic and you can put pics and fun stuff on there.. One of my SIL has a dream board in her room that she puts all of her goals, and dreams she wants to accomplish in her life.. The whole idea is kinda cool... That's what I'll probably use this window for. You could use chicken wire instead of screen and use clothes pins to attach pics or whatever you wanted. possibilities are endless :) I liked the idea of putting cute magnets on it though.. Fun magnets huh??!!..

Now I just need to find the perfect spot. Defiantly needs to be around some fun colors so it pops..

{Vintage-y Chair}

This is my latest furniture makeover piece. My SIL and I were Goodwill shopping and I spotted this chair and knew I had to have it. First it was marked $85, then we got them to go down to $6.99 and since it was half off saturday I got it for $3.99.. I was so excited to bring it home and work it over. My whole plan for this piece was to revamp it and sell it at a boutique. Well it didn't really work out that way and i'll tell you why in a little bit.

So here is the step by step process of revamping this chair.

First I took off the seat and removed the fabric.

Then I I gave it a good coat of cream paint. Just the change of paint made a huge difference. It was already looking so much better.

Then I glazed it with my custom brownish glaze mix. You can see my glaze tutorial HERE.... I Loved how it was turning out

Then I cut some new batting and stapled it to the seat.

This was so easy I was so excited to put the fabric on. I have been in love with this fabric forever and when I finished painting and glazing the chair I knew this fabric would look so good with it. I got it Fabric.com btw :) So anyways I made sure the pattern in the fabric was lined up and center with my seat and then I started stapleing it on. I pulled the fabric tight then staple. I started in the middle then would work my way out to the edges. When I got all the sides done I went back and stapled any empty holes so it was all nice and smooth.

When I was done I trimmed all the extras off the back.

This was rediculasly easy and actually really fun. Now I feel like I could recover something larger.... like a wing back chair maybe ;)

And here is the finished product...

So I was telling you why I didn't sell it at the boutique.. My hub fell in love.. I mean LOVE with this chair and talked me out of selling it. He said it would be the perfect chair to take off and put on his shoes LOL..... Love him!!! I did end up taking it to the boutique but only to jazz up my booth and to have a stylish chair to hang out in.. ;)

Break down of cost: Chair- $4, Paint- $5, Batting- FREE, Fabric- $6 {but this only took a fraction of what I had ordered. So I have enough to make a throw pillow maybe two} so this cost me less than $15. Love it....

{Mini}

This is like a mini Mini.... I have 2 of these and they are around 7" wide. They are so little and cute.. Perfect for small nicknack's. This is painted black w/ brown undertones.

{Wave}

This is 48" long, 10" deep, and looks soooo good in my kitchen.. Wish I got to keep it. In my kitchen area is where I have my photo shoots of my shelves and this one goes perfect with all my things.. This is painted black w/ brown undertones.

{old bed post finials}

I posted about these a few years ago, just on another blog. So I thought I would share them with you.

My mom found 3 of these at a yard sale years ago and gave them to me because she knew I would find something creative to do with them.. As soon as I saw them I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them. There were 2 long ones and 1 shorter one.

I loved the natural weathered look of them, so I left them the way they were..

I cut each piece different lengths in half so they would be staggered like the pic above.. These are one end and the others have the ball like the pic below. In my little house I only have room for one set of them and so these are the three that came.. The others are in storage {except the one below}..

I just love the chunkyness, and curvyness of them.. And the fact that they were salvaged from an old bed makes me love them even more..

{Weekend Projects}

K so I've had this little table since Clint and I have been married but it has been in storage for a few years. When we moved into the house we are in now I needed it to feel a hole in between my couches.. I thought I would go crazy and paint it a fun color.. Orange... I antiqued it as well.. That's what a call it when you glaze something :)

I actually loved how it turned out until I put it with all my decor :( I hated it... I even lived with for a while and switched up the decor on it and around it to try to make it work, but it just wasn't.. So I painted it cream just so I didn't have to look at it anymore... It has been untouched for a few months now.

My husband is hunting this weekend and I got in one of my cleaning moods and decided to detail my living room.. Literally I wiped down all the walls, cleaned base boards, moved couches ~~to find creepy dead bugs and heaven knows what~~ to vacuum up dust, cleaned windows... Anyways, since I had the couches pulled out I decided to antique my table.

Since everyone else has given the glaze tut, I thought I would share my way too.. Really it is pretty much the same..

What I use: sponge brush, a crappy towel folded in half twice and rolled up tight like a sleeping bag (that is the only way I could think to explain it (: ), wet rag ringed out, and glaze..

I always buy the clear glaze and add my own color tenting.. I do this only because I use different colors on my shelves, and it saves me money.. My favorite is burnt umber though.

1. start applying your glaze and get in all the nooks and crannies. I only do small portions at a time, just because sometimes the glaze can dry pretty quickly.

I like the sponge brush because it is so flexible and gets into little crevices easy.

2. with your rolled towel (griping each end so it stays rolled up tight) start wiping of the glaze. I like the towel rolled up tight because its more flat and doesn't take the glaze out the crevices. Then you don't have to go back over it with more glaze.

3. If you feel you have to much on the outer surface or see a spot you don't like, lightly wipe over it with your wet rag. I also roll the wet rag for the same reason. I just want to wipe the outer surfaces, not in the crevices.

And that's it. Really is soooo easy... It dries supper fast too.

Putting my little corner back together and I love how my table turned out. It looks so much better and goes with my room more. Ummmm I know the vintage blue suitcase is to big for my table. But since it's stuck in a corner I thought it was ok :) It will do, until I can find me a thrift store octagon table to fit perfectly in the corner.

So stuck in my corner I had stashed all my decor items I had no place for. I found this hidden behind everything. This is one of my tin tiles I practice paint techniques on and I loved how this one turned out so I figured I would keep it in the house. But i never found a spot for it so I stashed it.. Well I finally found a spot for it...... on this broken easel, now hung on the wall..

So I can keep it just the way it is or add a pic with a magnet for an instant picture frame.. I never thought of that before but I thought it was kind of cute.

Here is a before pic so you can see the detail of the tin better. These were all ordered black with brown undertones, so you can barely see the detail of the tin in the pics.

I'm usually rushing to get shelves delivered after I make them and never get the chance to take pics of them, so I thought I would take a little time today and have a photo shoot with these little guys. Especially since they are my newest piece available.

This is 24" and we have four available..

Sometimes the height of the shelves in pics are very deceiving, so I thought I would show how tall these little guys are.

This is an 18"and we have three of these available.

This is 12", and we have five of these available. These would be super cute if you had a collage of them on a wall.

{side table makeover}

{Before}

Remember this ugly thrift store side table?? The front had fingernail polish on it and one of the sides was covered in red paint.. I guess I saw the potential in it and loved the style of the table, so for $3-5 {i can't remember what I paid for it} why not!!!

{After}

Isn't she beautyful!!! It's crazy what a good coat of primer, cream paint, and glaze can do... I didn't even refinish the handles.. They were in pretty good shape and the color of them against the cream looked good so I left them the way they were.

So total cost of this project:

Busy Busy Busy

So these are just some of the shelves we busted out last week. There's a 6ft, three 5ft-ers, two 4ft-ers, seven 24 inchers, and a 12 inch. This week I have four 24 inchers, two 18 inchers, and four 12 inchers. Ya that's right no help this week, just me. Good thing they are all the mini shelves. I'll post pics as soon as I get them all painted. They are our smallest shelves yet..... and very affordable ;)

This is the {Fleur de lis}. Our shorter shelves, like this, are now called {scrappies}. They are the scraps left over from larger made shelves. They make cute fun little shelves. This piece is 12 inches wide and painted black with brown undertones.

This is the {Cathedral}. This too is a scrappy shelf. It is 24 inches wide and painted black with rich red undertones. This was an experimental color and we love how it turned out.

Another scrappy!! A couple years ago we had some requests for some knobby shelves and they turned out supper supper cute. I wish I had pics to show you how to die for they were.. This little guy my hub made. I painted it and he picked the knobs out and attached them.. This is the {Lion heart}. This is a

24 inch shelf painted black with rich red undertones.

This is the {Oval Romance}. This is our best selling piece and color. It's also the tallest piece we sell. This is a 24 inch painted black with brown undertones..

These are just some of the pieces we made last week. We are really trying to do better with taking pics of all our pieces ;) Also you can find all these pieces at Designer Blvd. in Gilbert.

Weekend Finds

{Sorry for the crappy pics, my camera for some reason would not focus very well..} But anyways I got some pretty good deals on these items this past weekend.

I found this cute little french provincial end table at my local thrift store for $5. Well it's not so great now but it will be as soon as I get done with it :)I have a thing for vintage luggage. I found these two at an antique store. The turquoise one I got for $5 and the dark orangey/brown one for $3.

This huge frame I also found at the antique store for $2. It's like 24" x 48". I thought it would make the perfect ..... well it could be a chalk board, bulletin board, mirror, I really could go on and on. Not sure what I'll use it for yet but I'll find a purpose for it soon..

{stuck in a hard spot}

So I have had to put some things on hold for a little while due to work location issues, so I apologize for putting everyone off for so long. This last weekend my husband and I did get all my shop tools and put them in an enclosed trailer that we have. Yeah!! I can start working on stuff again and it's right on the side of my house. Woohoo!!

So while I had tons of time, my mind was going crazy and I kept going back to things I use to do. About a year and a half ago I revamped yard sale and thrift store furniture and I loved it. When I moved I got out of it for (1. yard sales stink here and (2. no Goodwill's or d.i.'s.. But, I did end up finding me a pretty good thrift store. So for the last few months I have been stocking up on thrift store projects. I'll post pics once I figure out what exactly I am going to do with them. Is this something you would like to see more of?? What would you like see from me on my blog?

I have also been fantasising about redoing the decor in my little home.. My decor is very dark. Brown leather couches, dark wood and black furniture, lots of rich reds, golds, browns, and blacks. Pretty much the old world- Tuscany look. You get what I'm talking about?? Ya I'm pretty over it. Especially red. I want some brighter happy colors and not so much dark. So my first thing Ive been looking for is some fabric for curtains and throw pillows. Here are fabric samples I keep coming back to. Which ones do you like best?

I cant decide. I just really like green and turquoise right now and love the designs in most of these fabrics.

I Love LOVE Love this dresser/buffet. This was done by Dwellings by Devore. I want this for my living room just to put my TV on. I love the color too.

I don't know what my deal is with these chairs but I want two so bad. I found one at a donation location for the local thrift store and I asked my hub if he thought it was bad if I took it. He wouldn't let me :( I checked the thrift store forever after I saw it and it was already gone. But I just found another one in an antique store close to my home and it is $30. Cant decide if I should get it or not. That was a little more than I want to spend on just one. What do you think??

Ive been playing with new colors and techniques and this is one I came up with. This frame is a cinnamon orange and I tried the chippy paint technique with it and love it. I will be experimenting, so keep watching for all my new fun colors, different techniques, and new items..

If your name is drawn you get these two 4"x 6" tin picture frames. Through various techniques, both are given a chippy paint and antique look. The top left picture frame base color is cream and the right picture frame base color is a light brown, both neutral to go with almost any decor. You can hang these frames or stand them vertical and horizontal.

These are my newest styles. They are a lot smaller in height than most of my shelves and have been a huge hit. Not everyone has big walls for my bigger chunky shelves, so these are a great alternative for smaller walls and a smaller budget ;)

My absolute favorite shelf, color, height, and length. I call it the sconce because it measures length wise a little over 6". Perfect for little plants. This is also one of my top fav's. Style, length, and color..

{D.C. Update}Well I've been revamping the last 6 months. 2009 was so crazy busy I didn't have time for anything. It was the best year yet for Decor Createur and under circumstances I am so very grateful for such a great year. When business slowed down in January, I decided I needed to take some time out for my family. I d0 feel ready to get things going again though. I am working on new inventory to get my Etsy website up and going finally.. So please keep watching for updates on new items. I might even throw in some free giveaways.....

Tin Tile Bulletin Boards 24" x 48"

These bulletin boards have become pretty popular. These ones are 24" x 48", but I can do any size. The cork comes in 12" square tiles, so as long as the inside is 12", 24", 48" etc..I can do any size. I can also do the dark cork shown above or regular cork.

This is my newest project. The mirror itself is 24"x36" and the tiles around it are 12". So it is a very large mirror..
